Herrislea House Hotel

Nov 21, 2008

A colleague & I were recommended this by someone from Aberdeen, and how pleased we were when we arrived to a very warm welcome (pity the conditions outside weren't the same). We found the rooms very clean and large, very comfy bed and adequate bathroom facilities. We ate in the hotel both nights and although the menu was limited to... more

If there was a competition for the ugliest hotel in Britain - at least from the outside - then the Lerwick Hotel would have little competition. A grey pebble-dashed low-rise 1970's building, it looks more like a health centre or perhaps even a council estate. Fortunately, once inside things get much better, although there's definitely a 70's theme going on... more

A bod in Shetland is a type of self-catering hostel-like accommodation, bods being found throughout the islands and normally in old buildings by the harbour. Grieve House is where the Scottish poet Hugh McDiarmid (who managed to be expelled from both the Scottish National Party and Communist Party !!) lived for 8 years. Its located in the outer suburbs of... more

The hotel is beautifully situated on the western tip of the mainland of Shetland, located on its own sheltered bay, which according to the website was teeming with wildlife. Taking this with a large pinch of salt, since just about every hotel in Shetland claims the same thing, we were pleasantly surprised to be interrupted by the owner within a... more

The English owner of the Spiggie is a veteran global traveller and decided to put down roots in this beautiful part of the world, the hotel being located in a small village set amongst rolling hills overlooking a loch, with distant views of the sea. As a traveller he seems to know exactly what guests want, namely a friendly welcome... more

Almara

Nov 17, 2008

The house of Almara is very nice. The rooms are very beautiful, cleaning up and endowed with every confort. The place is comfortable indeed to visit that part of the islands Shetland. The breakfast is typical English, abundant and everything good. Rather the lady Marcia offends if doesn't eat enough!!! The most beautiful thing is the hospitality of the lady... more

We planned our trip in advance, checking B&Bs on the internet. We had arranged to stay at a B&B near Lerwick for a week, it was great, and time came to move on and experience another part of the islands, Northmavine. We had booked with Marcia for the only 3 nights available, 22, 23, 24 June 2008. We already had... more

Leraback Bed & Breakfast

Oct 19, 2008

Just back from Foula where we spent 3 nights at Marion Taylor's B and B 'Leraback'. We were on the island in connection with my husband's job. Given the time of year, and the rather wild weather, we were extremely comfortable in the warmth of the guest house. The warmth of the welcome too was outstanding and the breakfasts and... more

My wife and I first stayed here in 1983. We remembered its magical location, and we finally returned this summer for three glorious days (not guaranteed in Shetland). We found the location as wonderful as we had remembered, but the food immeasurably better. The present owners, Paul and Andrea, have resuscitated this old beauty of a hotel, and -- we... more

We didn't stay here but ate here twice. The food is very good especially the duck in orange & port sauce. My husband had the carvery one night & the mixed grill another & was well satisfied. Sweets nice too. And the friendliest teenage waitress that I've ever met! more

Leraback Bed & Breakfast

Sep 28, 2008

This was our second stay on the island having visited back in 2003. Both times we have stayed with Marion and Bryan. Their home, Leraback, is the only tourist accomodation on the island. It is very homely and Marion's cooking is superb. The bedrooms are a choice of double or twin. They are simply laid out with tea or coffee... more

I stayed at Leraback B&B for 3 weeks in winter. I found it to be clean and homely...in fact that is what i liked most about it...how homely it was. The food was excellent and Mrs.Taylor catered for my vegetarian needs fantastically.I am a reasonably good cook myself but the veggie options were second to none and i now use... more

This b&b accommodation is the very best we have ever stayed in (and these are many). I really can recommend the family room (which is also let for 2 people), a huge, cosy and absolutely quiet room with even a fridge! Breakfasts are delicious and Beth Cummings, the host, creates a very warm and personal atmosphere. You feel home from... more

I was put up in this Hotel by my work so I am glad I was not paying for this hotel . The evening meal was really terrible , starter I had Prawn Paster , lucky if there was one half of a prawn in it . Main course I had beef in red wine sauce , the sauce was... more

Bonavista Guest House

This hotel needs much refurbishment. The room was dusty and the breakfast was not good. The room was cleaned only once during the week and this was only after complaining during breakfast time. The room or toilet was not cleaned again on the other days. Usually guest houses have a cleaning person coming to the room every day to clean... more

Have stayed here a number of times. Not much has changed. At £50/night B&B for single occupancy of twin value is OK for Shetland where hotels & guest houses are generally overpriced. Room quite nice. Nicely decorated & appointed OK. Bathroom OK except towels still aren't changed for multi-night stays & they smell a bit. No shampoo - seems to... more
