This was a return trip for us....and I must say, our first one was better. This time we stayed when the owner was away (while he was at his home in Santa Barbara, CA) and I could definitely tell the difference, i.e. the staff seemed indifferent (maybe because of his absence? Hmmmm). The area had changed too, and may have been a reflection of the 2005 hurricane: the crowds were younger and it seemed as though they were looking for a Cancun-type environment, which of course, they would not get in Tulum. My husband believes he read somewhere that "children" were not allowed at the resort now, but there were children present--some were loud, waking him from his sleep, running around the property and hopping over the furniture at breakfast. If I wanted Disneyland, I would have gone to LA. The manager on duty seemed to be on the "payroll" of some local new businesses, promoting them to the point of being sure to take a "card" with his name on it when we went. The beach: there seemed to be a great number of other local resort occupants (and transients) using the La Conchita beach and the loungers--they would just make themselves at home with the chairs and the pads that were provided for resort guests. Only on our last day did the manager on duty do anything about it, but by then it was already too late for us. Finally, the manager on duty would not allow us to stay 3 hours past check-out. He made sure we got out of our cabana (the best one, No. 1) and upsold it to another couple that had just checked in the night before. The chairs on our patio were barely cold and they were already sitting there enjoying "our" room and view. We will definitely return to Tulum, maybe to purchase our own property, but will not be staying at La Conchita again....unfortunately.
