we have been visiting The Gambia for the last 6 years, and i cant wait to go back, someone once said to me "The Gambia is like marmite, you either love it or you hate it!" and from people I've spoken to that does seem to be true. I think if you go with no expectations, other than to have a great holiday, then you are in for a treat,(just remember you are in Africa not Europe!!) i have never found anywhere that treat their guests with the same manners and care, for example in restaurant they cannot do enough for you, will move tables etc, in this country you would just get grunted at!

People do want to talk to you and ask you "what is you name? and from which country?" but at the end of the day most of them are purely interested in you and what England is like, and just want a conversation,(its called being friendly) remember you are in their country, of course there are people selling things etc but don't you get that everywhere? and usually if you say "no thank you" they move on , don't say "I'll have a look tomorrow" because they will remember you!!

my grandparents went there for over 20 years, my grandad was in a wheelchair and he never had any problems there, always people on hand to lift him up into jeeps, and down onto the hard sand! mainly flat and ramps everywhere.

when people ask me what its like in The Gambia, i say the weather is fantastic, and I've never met such kind people, some of them have nothing but they are the happiest people you could meet, guess that's why they call it the smiling coast'

if you have space in your suitcase the local children love receiving pencils, its a simple pencil and yet there little faces when you give them a pencil is priceless, you can get about 20 pencils for 99p in tesco's etc.

we stay in Senegambia beach hotel in Kololi, the hotel is lovely the rooms are very clean, basic but have everything you need, (you don't spend the holiday in you room!) all have bed, fridge, air con, bathroom, the hotel is next to the beach so a little walk and your at the beautiful beach, there is a new pool to!

the restaurants outside the hotel are fantastic, you can get Chinese, Italian, African, English you name it its there! and all very good quality.

The Gambia is suited to people from all walks of life I've took my little girl from the age of 1yr, i would recommend you go and see for yourself, i would bet you'll be going back!! happy holiday!!!

We stayed here & were really impressed with the hotel generally. The food & service were really good, hotel was clean & a good standard although the air con wasn't very good & considering the heat it should have been better.
There were monkeys in the grounds & vulture feeding every day to see. A short stroll through the gardens took you to your private beach which was security patrolled so that none of the locals come & try to sell you things while you're sunbathing.
The pool area was clean & nice with waiter service, but it was just too hot to be round the pool so we opted for the beach very day.
Gambia was probably the best value holiday we've ever had, so cheap to go & stay there & the weather was amazing.
Worth a trip - not much to do in resort, it's great if you just want a chill out week. If you're not very well travelled & have only been to the normal destinations of spain, greece etc then you may find this a bit if an eye opener, but don't let that put you off - i'd recommend a visit here to anyone.

we stayed here for the second time in 6 months we were told it had been renovated but we were told wrong, when we arived at the hotel we were told it was due to close at the end of our stay for three months to do repairs.we looked at five rooms before we acepted one we could stay in the rooms were damp and dirty and really need looking at to believe.and yes we do know its a third world country but as they wish to charge the western world prices they should at least offer you something clean and well decorated and have water thats clean and thats hot,we had very little hot water doing our stay and always had to complain before we got it and this was very upsetting for us.and on top of that had to pay a lot extra to get a nice room as the company we went with would not help us upgrade! Thank You thomas Cook. The food got less and less as the two weeks passed as they were due to close.the security got less because they already let some staff go.we found cockroach in the resturant and our room.told the staff who were not suprised at all and said this is normal for the time of year.we found leaving the hotel a nightmare as there was always someone taging on to you asking for money.and really not wanting to take no for an awnser.
But after all of our comments we must say the staff here are so nice they really go out of there way to help you.we only found one who did not. The gardens are the best you could wish for and so many lovely birds, and the monkeys come and visit the hotel every day.lovely beach.the grounds are well set out with many swiming pools.
We feel if the hotel do all the work needed to it.then it will be one of the best hotels in the Gambia.as it really has a lot going for it.
so check it out before you go.

I have stopped at the Senegambia Beach hotel several times over the last 8 years and have enjoyed everytime, the one thing I will say is Gambia is a third world country and the hotel rating's are not the same as what we would use in the UK, so therefore things are not going to be the same as what people expect.
The new pool area is fantastic, only thing I would say, beware of the depth of the large pool as it is deep, even in the shallow end, there is a kids pool so no fear there.
The rooms are dark in the main bedroom area, but very bright in the bathroom. The same as when we stopped in the hotel in the UK before we flew out. The rooms are cleaned every day, and you recieve fresh towels daily. As someone has already stated you don't go to Gambia to spend your time in your room.
The hotel grounds are lovely and are well maintained by a range of gardeners.
If you require maintenance, they do take a while to come, but they do state GMT stands for Gambia Maybe Time.
The restaurant does need to be refurbished, but the hotel is closing at the end of April for 3 months and this is supposed to be what is being done.
There were several dogs in the hotel this time and one of them was vicious, we were advised after we complained about the vicious one (that stopped us entering our room) that the hotel was arranging for a dog catcher to come in and remove them, the problem was a family were feeding them, even though there were several huge signs all over the hotel stating, 'Do not feed the animals'
The staff in the hotel are all very friendly and can't do enough for you.
The breakfast in the hotel is buffet style, with quite a large selection, cereal, porridge, omelette, fried breakfast, pattiserie, fruit, toast, rolls, tea, coffee and fruit juices.
There are plenty of restaurants to eat in on the 'strip' , one I would definately recommend is McMahons Irish Bar, the food is amazing.
Overall the Gambia is a fantastic place, the Senegambia Beach Hotel is a lovely hotel with brilliant staff.

“Beautiful Wildlife and a real experience”

Senegambia Beach Hotel

Apr 22, 2008

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Senegambia Hotel. On arrival we were taken to our room which was basic and quite dark but everything was in working order. The room had air conditioning, TV and fridge. We had no hot water to begin with but as soon as we reported it to staff it was sorted straight away. The hotel grounds were beautiful, well maintainded and full of wildlife. If you like birds, there are plenty to see here, as well as lizards, monkeys and the daily vulture feed at 11.30. There were two pool areas. One quieter more shady pool where you could relax and just watch the birds and the other larger, more busy pool beside the beach. If you like a bit of shade it's best to get to this pool early in the day as the parasols get taken up quickly. The beach is ok but the sea can be a bit rough. The red flag was flying on most days during the 2 weeks we were there. If you can handle the bumsters on the beach take a walk down by the sea where you can find some lovely shells. The beach area beside the hotel had parasols and sun lounges and guards kept the bumsters away. We stayed on B & B which was buffet style with a good variety of food and plenty of it. We ate our breakfast outside where the birds came right up to the tables and if you had a banana, so did the monkeys! The strip outside the hotel had plenty of restaurants. Ali Baba's did a nice chicken kebab or pizza. We were fortunate enough to have neighbours at the hotel who had been to the Senegambia before and who took us along the beach to a bar/restaurant called Churchills where they cooked very good basic English food. The exchange rate was bad 35D to £1 so we needed more spending money than planned when we first booked the holiday when the exchange rate was 49D to £1. Keep small notes (25D & 50D) as wherever you go you will be asked for tips. The bumsters along the strip outside the hotel were exhausting. We had read previous reviews which suggested that a firm 'no thankyou' would do the trick but this was not true in our experience. We can only assume that as the rainy season was fast approaching, the bumsters were becoming more desperate to make money before the main tourist season ended. We went on two very good trips with the tour operator inside the hotel but we preferred the trips with the tour guides outside the hotel. Their trips were more personal and the 'round trip' which we did on an open-topped jeep was a real eye opener and well worth the money. If you only do one trip you must try the 'round trip' with the guys outside the hotel. This trip included a visit to the crocodile pool, Serrekunda market, a village compound and school, Paradise beach and Tanji fishing village. Also, during late afternoon try walking a short distance along the beach to Bijilo Monkey Park. Take some peanuts (you can buy them everywhere) in your pockets and you'll get some really good photographs.
The holiday was a real experience, we made some good friends and have some wonderful photographs of the wildlife. However, we will not be returning to the Senegambia for one reason. Briefly, several families staying at the hotel (some with children) had befriended a small group of homeless dogs who returned to the hotel grounds daily for food and affection. The dogs were harmless and only wanted some attention. Our understanding was that there was a complaint about the dogs and the hotel management agreed to get rid of them. Shortly afterwards the dogs were seen eating scraps of meat/bone (which we can only assume were laiden with poison) and as a result we had to watch two dogs (almost 3) die in the most horrific manner right in front of our rooms. This was very upsetting (especially for the children) and unforgivable. We would not like to witness anything like this again. If dogs are not welcome in the grounds of the hotel then the management should come up with a method of keeping them out altogether such as a walled boundary. It is a shame that this had to happen because we would have recommended the hotel to anyone. After this experience and until a solution can be found, we cannot.
