I had heard about the Wellington Room in a nationally syndicated newspaper, so I thought I would give it a try. It is upstairs off the main street, and therefore easy for the tourist or even resident to miss. The dining room is small and cozy. The view of the water is breathtaking (I would recommend advance reservations and ask for a table with a view). When I first arrived, it was tea time and there was an enormous selection of teas and assorted munchies that go with tea. I felt like royalty. The waitress, Rachel, was efficient and had that air that makes you feel like your someone really special. We didn't have any dinner plans so actually made reservations for that night for dinner. When we arrived back, the room was lit to a romantic, soft hue, and the view was even more breathtaking as the sun was setting over the Pisquata River (basically the ocean). It is quite clear that the upscale diner eats here, but the traveler, in any attire appropriate for inside dining, is more than welcome. The chef, and owner, who had been featured in the article I read, came to our table and asked how our meal was. It was truly amazing. If you want to feel like a million bucks, be treated like you are Donald Trump, just go there. If you have a special occassion you will not be disappointed. Great wine selection. This chef is very well trained, and as the article I read stated, his cusine truly has a global influence. A wide assortment of entrees and I was told the menu was always changing to add new items. This is the best kept secret of Portsmouth, although from the excellent reviews, I am suprised. They do not overbook, and the restaurant is small enough that two wait staff can attend to the needs of patrons. So, find that door leading to the stairs to the Wellington Room. If you don't want to go for dinner, go for tea, it is an unusual experience not often observed in the states. Prices are moderate to higher for dinner, but a steal for tea time. One couple that I spoke to told me that they go every Saturday afternoon as a ritual, and would go no where else.
