I'm not a sports fan; I escorted a group from Adventure Tours to Cooperstown to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I loved the experience from beginning to end. The staff of young people who assist visitors are wonderful and attentive; the entry area is efficient; the gift shop is enticing; and the library/book shop is equally good.
The building itself is quite beautiful and the state of the art galleries are packed with artifacts from baseball's greatest stars. The hall of records is particularly interesting and the Hall of Fame itself with a bronze plaque for each of the inductees has the feeling of a cathedral - the sort of place where you want to just sit for a while to contemplate the contributions of these great men and women to the sport.
The Baseball Experience is a 13-minute show of multi media that is pretty cool. It's set up like a ball park; you sit in bleachers and take a load off your feet while being entertained. The waiting line looks formidable, but it moves quickly. They run a show every half hour on the hour and half hour and the place seats maybe 150 people. Don't miss it.
I recommend this place to young and old; to fans and non fans. It's a good time. Ask when the exhibition games are played in Doubleday Field. You can watch a game for free just a few streets away.
