The Tunnicliff Inn sounds quaint and charming on its web site, and boasts all kinds of amenities such as DVD players and WiFi. But when we arrived, we found a very run-down place, with lumpy mattresses, horribly out of date bathrooms, and foam cushions on the toilet seats. I refused to take a shower because I was uncertain about the cleanliness of the bathroom. Definitely pass this one up, even if it is close to the Hall of Fame.

“Charming Old Inn”

My husand and I and our 7 year-old stayed at the Tunnicliff Inn for one night last week and we enjoyed it very much. The staff was very friendly, and because the larger executive king room was available, they put us up in that room at no additional charge. True, it's not the Ritz, as another reviewer said, but it was built like in 1804 or 1806 and that's what makes it charming. It's an old inn and it has quirks, but our room was spacious and they provided a small frig and a coffeemaker, and our bathroom had two terry robes. Breakfast was included and it was delicious! Homemade cinnamon rolls, an egg dish, potatoes, cereals, fruit, and juice and coffee. And it was just around the corner from the Hall of Fame, so the locale was ideal. No complaints here. I'd stay here again.....

The Tunnicliff is in a perfect location. Everything in Cooperstown is within 3 blocks of this hotel.
I found the hotel to be homey and had some nice touches. Some people in my party had some complaints, but most thought it was quaint and suitable.
It's true the decor isn't what I would pick, and there were some quirks...but it's a 200 yr old home, and is going to have some small issues (like small bathrooms, slanted floors).
The breakfast was very good, especiallay considering it was included. They also have digital cable, and a selection of dvds at the front desk for no charge.
It's not the Ritz, but for a small charming town, this is a good pick. Just go in with an open mind, and try not to complain about every little thing that isn't what you expect in a normal hotel.

“Overpriced dump, getting by on location only --”

Tunnicliff Inn

In truth we booked in, paid, but did not stay...the room for which we
paid something like $150/night was threadbare, with conspicuously cheap furniture, slanty floors (a dropoff of probably 8-10 inches just inside the door), and a general air of cheapness. To get to the room we had to step over piles of used linens and cleaning equipment in the hallways and on the stairs (this was after 3PM, so they should
have been aware guests were coming). After about 10 minutes my wife and I decided that even if we had to eat the night's charges we didn't want to stay there. We handed back the key (at which the owner
or mgr loudly complained to anyone in earshot that we'd been saying nice things about the place; we had, when we got there, but had pretty well stopped by the time we got up to our room. To the owner/
mgr's credit he only billed us for half the tariff, in the end, as apparently someone else came in and rented the room. Still, the overwhelming impression was of a place that is squeezing every penny out of its location and putting as little as possible back into the property. That, if true, is part of a more general trend visible in Cooperstown, a place I REALLY like but which has become more and more of a tourist trap: you really have to watch yourself there, in dealing with virtually every business in the center of the village, because too many (not all, by any means) have decided they can squeeze the one-time visitors and not worry about the longer term. And that, sadly, is not how it should be --

I was very happy with the location of the inn, one of the only places to stay that is on the "main drag". I was not so happy when i walked into the room we were staying in. It was run down and musty and very dusty. There was a bed and a large air conditioning unit (not in the window) and one picture hung on the wall. We tried to go to the downstairs bar that the website says is so much fun. Well, it closes at 9:00 p.m. I spent most of the night struggling with my asthma, which was set off by the condition of the room. Things got worse when it was time to take a shower in the morning. There was a big bug in the shower and the shower was so small that there definately was not enough room for both me and the bug! When I attemtped to iron my pants with the iron provided by the hotel, my favorite pants got ruined by the old iron. When i asked the front desk staff for a new iron they seemed indifferent to the incident and it took several minutes before any one even attemtped to find me a different iron. The most disapointing part was the amount of money we payed to stay at this not -so-charming Inn.
