just returned after 1 night @ mohican motel, cooperstown, ny. myself (age 37) & my husband (age 35) drove 1 1/2 hrs to see a concert (Paul Simon) on the 4th of July. we decided just a wk before, therefore, lodging was scarce. cooperstown is nationally known for the Baseball Hall of Fame so w/it being summer & tourists visiting the museum, w/it being the holiday & w/it being the concert, it was tough to find a place to stay. our choices were $303 @ the Otesega (where Paul Simon & band were staying), their sister inn, which was $218, a local B&B for $220 (only a queen bed) or the Mohican $112, we opted for the Mohican being it was an in & out overnight deal for us. Yes, it's located w/in walking distance of the village, but i strongly wouldn't recommend it. maybe we're spoiled as we own a marriott timeshare in aruba, but this motel was the pits. the staff was uninterested & merely moving was a major effort. after requesting a spare roll of toilet paper, i thought i was going to be questioned as to why we needed it. the king size bed/non smoking room was in the back of some once house turned motel type building. it overlooked a cab to a tractor trailer & other miiscellaneous items. the room was dark , ie, dungeon like. it SMELLED like it was filled of mold & never been aired out. the bed's mattress was so thin, it was painful to sleep on. the shower stall was gross.. the tiled floor's grout looks like mold ate it away & water seemed to seep up through it. I know I should've been afraid when the sign @ the front desk checkin says "refunds only w/in the 1st 1/2 hr of checking in..." once checking it out, i did try to get other lodging, but there was nothing w/in walking distance to the concert. so, all in all, i wish we pd the extra $106 & slept in a queen bed @ a local B&B which included a breakfast. the chamber of commerce does recommend this property as being nothing extravagant, but a clean place to lay your head. yikes! the B&Bs in the area are gorgeous. nothing else for chain motels (w/in walking distance to village). we ended up having a huge breakfast buffet @ the Otesega. It was great ($28 including tax & tip), w/outside seating overlooking the lake. Dinner @ the Tunnicliff's fine dining restaurant (we were the only 1's there.) it was so/so. as for Cooperstown's village, it's really cute. numerous restaraunts, pubs, shops. not much for any outside seating @ establishments. concert @ doubleday field was great! PS the 1 upside to the Mohican were the 2 cute ducks that lived in a pen outside of our room.
