We recently stayed at the August Lodge and while it is a beautiful lodge in a gorgeous setting, we found the property full of "warnings", both from the owner and signs throughout the lodge. We were almost afraid to flush the toilet or run the shower (sign in bathroom warned that you would pay for flood damage), use cooking utensils (list of prices of every item in kitchen area, including a sponge!), lose a key ($20 charge), or play ping pong ($1 for lost ball). They must have had trouble in the past to post so many warnings throughout the lodge, but it makes you feel very unwelcomed. The wood floors and open hallways do make it loud to walk, but their quiet times and laundry rules were a bit strict and made it hard to relax. You always felt like you were being watched. It is not the most kid friendly place and I'm not sure why they want to cater to the ballparks in the area and have those families stay there. They also have a very strict cancellation policy and check only for final payment.
Jami, the woman owner, is nice. Steve, her husband, is not the most friendly person and did not even thank us for our stay after we spent over $1000 at his lodge--just took our keys at check out and stared at us. We also saw him get very upset and yell at some children playing ping pong. Perhaps they are more friendly when the baseball team families leave and the lodge is quieter with guests more their type. All the families that we observed were very nice, quiet and always aware of their children.
Probably a great place in the fall (I'm sure the fall foilage is spectacular and you have an incredible view from every room), but not a place I would recommend for families with children that want to enjoy the outdoors.
