My traveling companion & I recently visited San Diego to spend a few days at the beach. We stayed at the Ocean Beach Hotel which we booked online thru the hotel's website. Ocean Beach is a vibrant, colorful, friendly beach town & the same descriptors could be used for the hotel. Within a couple block radius there are good restaurants (Nick's) & lots of fun bars in addition to funky, non- chain shopping. The hotel is on the beach & the well manicured courtyard has great views of the sun dipping into the pacific; a great place to do a bit of socializing & meet guests from all over the world. The staff at the Ocean Beach Hotel is very friendly, courteous, helpful & professional, as well as bilingual. We practiced our Spanish with Luis. They were able to answer all of our questions & provide us with whatever we asked for....within reason. The rooms are small but clean & come equipped with a small refrigerator & microwave. We enjoyed our stay so much that we booked a room for the following year already. If you are looking for a five star hotel do not come here. However, if you are a bit of a hedonist with a sense of adventure, I know you would enjoy your visit here.

First I want to say that the location on ocean beach is terrific. I personally prefer mission beach area now being to them both since I think it is much cleaner and a lot more to do but if you like ocean beach you cannot beat the location.
With that being said I was very disappointed with the hotel. For the price of $250 and night our room was not very nice. The airconditioner did not work well and we had the smallest bathroom space. Also although it had two beds the beds were very cramped in the room with a partial wall split, The area at night had many problems with the homeless population and we felt unsafe walking around at night with the kids. I suspect the high rate was for the ability to walk directly to the ocean and some of the rooms had an ocean views. Ours was sparsely considered a view.
On the positive note the staff was very friendly and the places to eat in walking distance were amazing! I guess if I had paid in the low to mid $100 a night it would have been worth it but with no pool, no hot tub, no luxury so to speak it was a little to pricey for the quality.

Being from Amsterdam it is difficult to feel at home in a dull City like San Diego. But The Ocean Beach was really fine. The staff was helpful, the rooms were clean and OK, the price was good. The neighbourhood of the OB is nice, wooden houses, antiqueshops, a beautiful pier with a cafe where you can see dolphins and seals while having your breakfast, also jugglers and hippies making music. In the reviews I read they were called "vagrants". Well, I have never felt unsafe. There is enough police around.If you want to be in a dull and ugly San Diego Hotel, go the Marriott and enjoy yourself!
If I ever go back to San Diego I will come back here. Distance to the city is only 20 minutes and you are at a wonderful seaside in sixties-style. We loved it!

First off, I guess I just didn't know how crappy the town of Ocean Beach is. That may have saved me from paying over $200/ night on the OB Hotel. The room was extremely small. So small it didn't/ couldn't have a desk. The bathroom was so small it didn't/ couldn't have a tub. Bed was awful. TV was tiny - maybe a 19". No breakfast. Walls were thin and my wife was terrified to walk outside the hotel by herself at night because the area is filled with drunks and vagrants. Bottom line - STAY AWAY!
