The Green Tortoise can't be beat with its outstanding prices and location. The staff really makes you feel at home and are friendly and courteous. They also distribute information on how to get to various attractions and landmarks, a very valuable asset! Also, there are constant events going on within the hostel, e.g. open-mic night, bar crawls, group tours, etc. Always something to take part in. The free breakfasts are of amazing quality - fresh fruit, waffle irons, bagels, bread, condiments...couldn't have asked for better! Free dinner on Thursdays! The washrooms are shared, but recently renovated and clean for the most part; I would still recommend wearing flip-flops in the showers. It's located just steps away from the famous Pike Place Market and is only a short bus ride away from most Seattle landmarks. Overall, I had a great experience at the Green Tortoise and would not hesitate to recommend it to any traveller!

We were travelling as a group of 4 50ish women friends and booked the Green Tortoise as our usual hotel was full. We had a blast. You couldn't ask for a better location, the staff were friendly and accommodating, the room was great and the free breakfast was amazing - eggs, toast, waffles, fresh fruit, brownies, coffee and tea. You do need your own milk or cream. We participated in a trvia quiz and a pub crawl on the Friday night and had a great time.

We will stay at the Green Tortoise again.

“Fantastic hostel”

The Green Tortoise Hostel

Jan 30, 2008

I stayed here for 3 nights in a private room with my travelling friends and have to say its definately the best hostel I have ever stayed in. The room was very clean and each bed had its own fan and light.

The location is amazing, the Seattle market is directly opposite and just a short walk into town. The staff were friendly and helpful giving us shampoo and toiletries because we ran out, and the breakfast was a nice surprise. The several computers that they have for free internet were great for us to contact home - they were appreciated after a month travelling.

The best thing about this place I thought was the nice relaxed international atmosphere, everyone staying there was very friendly.

We booked into a private room at the Green Tortoise for two nights - a Friday and a Saturday. The location is fantastic - directly opposite Pike Market.

We arrived early on the bus from Vancouver - around 9.30am. We were told that the room they wanted to put us in was not ready but that they did have a private room available. Only catch was that it was above the common room and it might be noisy. We didnt mind and said that was fine. The lovely girl at check-in then told us that the room would be only $60 per night! That is a saving of $17 per night.

The room was very clean - one large double (or bigger?) bed and a bunk on top. We had the whole room just for two people. The rooms were warm and very comfortable. The rooms had a little table and chair and a sink.

Breakfast was pretty good - we didnt eat much though. Free internet is always great.

The Friday night was quite noisy but we had had a few beers and thought it was funny - some guy singing every song he knew at the top of his voice. Saturday though was very quiet - or maybe I just slept too deeply!

Overall - loved this place. Would definitely stay again!

“The Funky Green Tortoise Was Fabulous, Great, and Terrific”

The Green Tortoise Hostel

This funky hostel was indeed funky, literally, but cool. It was my first time staying in a USA hostel and I was pleasantly surprised. As expected, there were more amenities at a higher price. There were at least 7 PCs, including Apples with free internet access, do-it-yourself waffles for breakfast, plenty of toilet paper in the bathrooms, and THE best rain showerheads. The bunkbeds were nice and large and comfortable, with their own personal fans attached. This really helped with the stuffy, funky smell. (Now, the smell could've been attributed to one of the suite-mates, who was quite slovenly.)

While the price was higher than most European hostels, it was much lower than downtown Seattle hotels. It is also located across the street from the infamous Pike Place Market, which is excellent for shopping and good eats. Situated smack-dab in the middle of downtown, you'll spend little money on transportation to must-see sites, such as the Space Needle, Seattle Museum of Art, and Seattle Center.
