We just got back from our vacation to Williamsburg, Virginia. We booked a private ghost tour with Colonial Tours. It was excellent. The tour we recevied on Friday evening was wonderful. Our tour guide was fabuous. The kids are still talking about it. In fact, our tour was so personal and informative, we feel it isn't necessary to go back to this particular historic area, but we will. Our guide shared so much information. We were a family of six with kids ages 9, 11, 13, and 14. This tour was worth every dollar. It was a great start to our vacation and we will recommend your site to anyone we know who visits the area. Happy Haunting.

Often times it is not the places you go or the sights you see that provide the special vacation memories, but rather the people that you meet during the journey. John Sutton is one of those people. We have a family of 5 with children ages 9, 11, and 13. From the moment I contacted John to make arrangements I had a sense that his passion and love of history would be infectous with our family. We booked 4 tours with John; Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown, Williamsburg (Williams & Mary) and a Ghost Tour. John has an excellent command on the history of the area. What we appreciated the most was how interactive he was with our children to keep them engaged...after all learning is fun...and John excercised much fun along the way. On each of our tours John would bestow a gift to the children to remember what they learned. The children truly enjoyed the interactive plays that John would direct on each of his tours. As we dressed in American and British soldier coats, hats and dont forget the drum I chuckled to think what the other visitors were thinking when they saw us walking to reinact the surrender of the British at Yorktwown. These are the moments that create memories and these are the moments that John Sutton helped create for our family. The children all grew very fond of John and were sad to depart. I would definetly recommend engaging John's services for famialies or histroy buffs alike! You will not regret!

Colonial Tours founder and guide John Sutton brings history to life. We took the train from DC to Williamsburg and were treated to a most amazing tour of Jamestown Settlement which included a reenactment of events between Pocahontas and John Smith with my family participating. A native Virginian, Sutton knows every detail of what transpired when and is great at telling true tales of our countries founders. Mr Sutton was exceptional at gearing our tour toward my two children, ages 10 and 14, even involving them at every step.

After a brief lunch, we continued on to Colonial Williamsburg where the historical journey continued. we were able to visit shops and costumed characters of the day added to the true feel of what life was like there for our forefathers. We were able to visit William and Mary College where George Washington was educated .

We booked a tour with them for our honeymoon in November by email. I have my blog address in the signature in my email and the tour guide went to my blog, read it and then cancelled my tour because of "personal things written in the blog" and apparently language.

Completely unprofessional.

He said he couldn't imagine doing a tour and having things from the blog pop into his mind.

Way to seperate your opinions from your work.

Yes, I refused this person tour. I wished to send her a message that there are people that do not condone foul language and bad behavior.

This was by far the WORST part of our trip to Williamsburg, which overall was fantastic. Billed as "not for children", it was NOT a candlelight walk through the town telling ghost stories. Instead, we went to three different houses and with NO explanation from the guide, actors came in to perform vignettes of fictional characters that I am guessing were fictional stories about ghosts. It was confusing, awkward, NOT scary at all, and the guide even appeared to be napping while the vignettes were taking place. This was an hour and a half of my life that I will NEVER get back. If you have any interest in true ghost stories, DON'T GO!! The sad thing is that, given the ambiance of Williamsburg, it could have been really good. UGH.

We were two couples in the area for a weekend and John was our private guide for three days. 2 hours a day for each of the three towns....he had a perfect blend of history and rumors to color each tour and was easy to be with for the three separate days.
Highly recommend

John Sutton really made our trip to Williamsburg a huge success. I had arranged for him to meet our group on our first day to Williamsburg to give us an overview and help everyone decide on where and what they would like to visit. Everyone liked him so much that I ended up booking him again for the next day to take us to Yorktown and Jamestown. He told stories, recited quotes and was just delightful. Our motor coach driver has taken dozens of groups there over the past few years and he said that John Sutton was so much better than anyone he had ever seen.

That was the most fun I've ever had learning about history. John Sutton adds value by including tidbits of interesting information, that I'd never heard before. He has done his homework! I'll be back for more!

I was here about 40 years ago and loved it. Now, the place is a shoppers delight but for a person with a hard time walking, was much too large. We regret not booking a horse tour but by the time we found a stand, the tours were booked.
